Thinking Of Keeping Pigs?
We run Professional Pig Keeping Courses from our Farm...
We decided to start up professional Pig Keeping Courses to help anyone interested in pigs, whether you just want to keep them, breed them or eat them. Our Courses can guide you in the right direction...
Here on our farm we have a blend of Traditional straw built pigs huts and Modern pig arks. The traditional hut design all though quite simple was taken from a design dating back over one hundred years.
This consists of posts and stock fencing to form the main shape of the hut and walls which are stuffed full of straw. We leave a gap for the door and then attach the roofing for the final touch. We have found these houses work really well and all the pigs seem to like them. Year round the pigs have lovely wallows to play in which keep them warm and cool depending on the time of year.
The process of building these takes us about a day and once there in they're there for good. When the field is resting we replace the old bedding and the straw with new.
The breeding sows come up to the big barn near the house to have their litters and the new family return to the fields when the piglets are about two weeks old. Our sows do not get placed in a farrowing pens and they are free to range about spacious pens.
We try to maintain a the original diversity in the types of grasses and plants that grown in our fields. This means there is more for the pigs to eat and discover. All our pigs have a happy and stress free life.
