Large Black

• The Large Black was developed from the black pigs of Devon and Cornwall and the European pigs found in East Anglia. Sadly, due to modern commercialisation the Large Black was only just saved from extinction. They still remain one of the rarest breeds of native British pig.
  
  Large Blacks evolved in an environment where they had to graze and forage. They have retained these abilities and are capable of surviving anywhere where there is enough grass to graze on. Formerly fed to enormous weights to produce carcasses with a large amount of fat, Large Blacks are now used for lean pork and bacon and is Britain’s only all black pig.
  
  The breed is characterised by great length and depth of body and its coat colour makes it tolerant of many sun born illnesses. They have large lop ears which appear to cover most of the face and eyes. They are extremely inquisitive, and very hardy, which means there ideally suited to our traditional outdoor system. The Large Black meat is darker than that of white breeds which gives it a rich and distinct flavour.
